Transitioning to single parent status

Posted on March 17,2017 in Divorce

If you are going through a divorce, you probably cannot wait for it to be over and to be able to say you are single. Although 34 percent of children live in a single-parent home, the situation is still treated as though it is abnormal. You are not alone as a single parent, even though it can feel that way. There are things you can do to make the transition easier.

Practice self-care

You are going to grieve the loss of your relationship. Knowing this helps you be ready for those days when you just do not want to get dressed and be an adult. Take time to do things for yourself when the other parent has the children. It is okay to enjoy your time alone.

Set a budget

As a single parent, you are suddenly responsible for all the expenses in the home. If you can set a budget and stick to it, you will have more control over your finances. You may need to find a way to make extra income or cut expenses to reduce your stress over money.

Maintain a routine

While you should do things out of the ordinary, having a daily routine can keep you going when you do not want to. Normalcy reduces stress. Your children will appreciate the stability of daily tasks and events while they adjust.

Create and take advantage of your support system

Hopefully, you already have friends and family who help you in parenting and emotionally. As a single parent, you may need to reach out to them to let people know exactly what you need help with. You may also have to work with other parents to get your child to activities or events when you are not available.

Professional help is available

You may also want to consider a therapist to help you through the immediate emotions and loss. Talking to a counselor is not a sign of weakness. In fact, it is a sign of strength to know when you need assistance addressing the hurt and dealing with your emotions. It is hard to break with the old.

Your divorce is a significant change in your life. You should have an advocate on your side, even if you are going through an uncontested divorce, just to ensure you are making the right decisions for your situation. Your attorney can help you stay focused on your goals and offer insight into the process to help find the best solution for you and your family.
